Pet Safety Around Kids: Try These Helpful Tips!

By Pet Insurance Fast Leave a Comment

Kids love pets and pets typically love kids! The bond between a child and their pet is something very special. This bond can be broken easily if your child doesn’t understand how to behave around animals. Take some time to go over basic pet safety with your children. When bringing in a new pet into the family the topic of pet safety around kids is an important one that deserves some focused attention for the smoothest transition possible.

Pet Safety Around Kids

Ask Permission to Pet

Kids love to run up to animals especially dogs and pet them. This can often scare an animal and cause it to bite or scratch. Even nice animals can get scared and react. Teach children to ask for permission before petting any animal. The owner knows the pets personality the best and will let you know if it is okay for your child to pet.

Do Not Leave Children Alone

Never leave a child alone with animals. You should even avoid leaving your family pets alone with children. Anytime a child is around animals they need to be properly supervised. Young children are not responsible enough to be in charge of a pet while alone. Use a crate, put the pet in another room or outdoors if you are leaving the room the child and pet is in.

Teach Proper Pet Etiquette

Teaching children of all ages proper pet etiquette can prevent accidents from happening. Children should know not to put their fingers in an animals face, pull on their tail or ears. Children should also know not to disturb an animal that is sleeping or eating. Animals need their space and children should be able to respect that. Also teach children that teasing an animal is never allowed.

Picking the Right Pet

If you are thinking about bringing a pet into your home, make sure to do some research. There are breeds of animals that do better with children than others. With this said even the most docile animal can hurt a child if they feel threatened. Prior to bringing a pet home spend some time at the local shelter getting a feel for how your child interacts with the animals.

Do Not Stick Fingers in Cages

Children love to touch animals and that is perfectly fine. However, if an animal is in a cage do not allow the child to stick his or her fingers in the cage. Teach children to ask an adult if the animal can come out of the cage to play. Make sure your child knows never to take an animal out of its cage without adult supervision.

Teach Your Kids Pet Discipline

Children should not be in charge of disciplining pets but they should not how to give commands. Teach your children to talk to your pet in a stern voice when they want the pet to stop doing something. They should know the commands for sit, stay, stop and come. Teaching your kids basic commands and how to speak to them in an authoritative manner will help build a mutual respect between the pet and child.

We hope these tips are helpful for you when introducing a new pet to your kids. Let us know if you have any more tips in the comments below!

Don’t forget to get your pet insurance to keep them safe when the unexpected happens. Just like you care for your own children’s health, you need to make your pet’s health a priority too.

Traveling With Pets? Road Trip With Dog or Cat Tips

By Pet Insurance Fast Leave a Comment

Traveling with pets can be stressful if you are not prepared. Being prepared for your upcoming travels will keep you and your pet happy and stress-free! Maybe you’re wanting to plan a road trip with a dog or cat and are wondering what next steps to take in planning. Always remember that your pets safety needs to come first and take all measures to make sure him or her is safe at all times.

Tips for Traveling with Pets

Tips for Traveling with Pets

Have a Plan

Having a plan in place will help to prevent any hiccups along the way. If you are traveling by air, bus or train you will want to find out the policy for bringing pets. If you will be traveling by car and staying at hotels, make your reservations in advance.

Do Your Research

It can be hard to find hotels that allow pets in the room. Knowing ahead of time whether your hotel allows it or not will save you a lot of frustration. You might also want to consider locating dog parks in areas you will be traveling.

Do a Test Run

Before you leave on your trip do a small test run. Go on a day trip with your pet to see how they do in the car. This will let you see if you need to make any adjustments to your trip. This will also give you a good idea of how often you need to stop and if your pet gets car sick. If you find that your pet does get indeed get car sick, talk to your vet about your options.

How to Travel with a Dog

Take Breaks

If you are taking a long road trip make sure to take frequent breaks. Animals need to stretch, get in a little exercise, drink water (these pet travel bowls come in handy!), eat and relieve themselves. Keeping your pet cooped up in the car for to long will make them restless and possibly hard to deal with. Taking breaks will make your trip more enjoyable for you and your pet.

Visit the Vet

Prior to going on your trip set up an appointment with your veterinarian. You will want to get your pet a physical to ensure they are healthy enough to travel. You will also want to have a record of all vaccinations your pet has received. If your pet is behind on their vaccinations, this is a great time to get them up to date. (*Remember to save on vet visits by having pet insurance. Get your FREE Quotes!)

Use Restraints

You will want to ensure that your pet is safe while traveling. You can use a pet harness, crate or pet carrier. Make sure whatever system you are using is well ventilated and offers your pet a little room to move around. Make sure you have a leash available before you remove your pet from the restraint. Pets are often excited when you go to them and you would not want your pet to run out into traffic.

Do I Need Pet Insurance? Yes! Here’s Why.

By Pet Insurance Fast

For anybody who owns a pet, you will be well aware of the myriad of problems that can arise from having a pet as part of your family. You may be thinking do I need pet insurance? Before you welcome a pet into your family, you need to make sure that you have both the finances and the time on your hands to care for your new pet properly.

This means buying your pet the accessories it needs. As well as getting the treatment that it requires. Also being sure to provide it with the love, affection and exercise that all animals deserve. Many families might take in a pet without thinking of the potential consequences. This can lead to a lot of problems down the line. So be sure to think about the resources needed in order to take good care of a pet first.

Wondering if you need pet insurance? Yes! Here's why... #pethealth #doghealth #cathealth #petinsurance #petadvice

Pet Insurance Helps You Plan Ahead:

Providing proper pet care and prioritizing their health is one of the biggest parts in deciding whether or not to have a pet. Pet insurance is a premium that you might think you don’t need to be paying out, but you’d be surprised.

Even the smallest complication with an animal can cost you a lot of money to get it fixed. If left untreated your pet can potentially live a life of constant pain and suffering. Which no loving pet owner ever wants to have happen to their beloved furry family member.

If you want to avoid putting your pet through a tough life because you cannot afford it, make sure that you get pet insurance sooner rather than later. Yes, it’s another monthly payment for a “What If?” moment. However, remember to keep in mind that when it comes time for the insurance to pay out for your coverage, you will be glad that you had it.

Save Money By Being Prepared:

Just like with most bills we pay in our daily lives, Veterinary bills are going up all the time. Another big reason for costs rising is the huge array of different treatments that are available out there. These extensive procedures can cost a lot of money, and somebody has to deal with how to make sure the bills get paid. Therefore, vets feel more vindicated charging higher fees if they need to buy in a new system that costs a lot of money.

Thankfully, comprehensive pet insurance will stop you from worrying about it. As long as you get the policy taken out for your pet before it falls ill your premiums should be very fair. So don’t let potential cost become an issue for you.

There’s no reason why your pets insurance should be sky high unless your animal is incredibly high-risk. You will never know your potential costs for a plan until you take a couple minutes to get a free quote.

Having Your Pet Insured is Vital:

So, if you are considering getting a family pet make sure that you look into the options for insurance very heavily. Health is a huge part of having a pet and can save you a lot of money if you are willing to pay the extra expense in the meantime.

Is pet insurance really worth it? It definitely can be...find out why. #pethealth #doghealth #cathealth #petinsurance #petadvice

We do not know what the future holds but everyone knows that it is always a good idea to be prepared ahead of time when the unexpected hits. Having pet insurance can be viewed as a safety net for your pet’s future health and well-being. Who wouldn’t want to invest in that?
